Creating a homey environment doesn’t have to cost a ton, or be complicated! Start by checking off this list.
1. Provide a drying rack if you have a washer (and dryer)
The drying rack doesn’t have to be fancy, or large–just provide somewhere for people to dry things.
2. Coat Hook or wall hooks are always helpful — especially if there’s cool weather
A coat hook is always useful, especially for cities where tote bags are useful (aka all of them)
3. Don’t keep things in drawers, or take up the bottom drawer — making people less likely to forget stuff
If you provide things for people to use, make it easy for them to tell what’s yours and what’s theirs.
4. Provide coasters
Coasters are good for you and them! Save your surfaces.
5. Provide a close-top kitchen trash can and instructions on what to do with trash
This is an especially good tip for those Airbnbs that allow pets.
6. Provide a new sponge and soap if the guest needs to wash dishes
Sponges hold TONS of germs, so if that’s the main way to wash dishes, make sure each person is provided a new one. If you have a dishwasher, the scrub brush and some dishwasher soap should do just fine.
7. Provide a blanket
Provide some blankets in the living room, and if it’s colder, the bedrooms. Try to go for ones that will be easy for you to clean, but cozy for guests.
8. Provide extra toilet paper
Provide toilet paper, plus a few extra rolls depending on how long the person is staying.
9. Lamps
Provide lamps! The warmer the better, and the less breakable, the better for you and the guest.
10. Towels for the kitchen and bathroom (pool, too, if that’s an amenity)
Provide towels in the bathroom. At least 2! And bonus points for soap from a local shop.
